A special type of person dedicates their life to the service of others. They come from all walks of life, financial backgrounds, religious beliefs, and political affiliations. I found my call to serve early on through the example set by my parents. Both took very different approaches to life and service, but did their own parts in helping others in many different ways. My own service has helped keep me away from here, keeping me busy in other parts of my life.
The advantage of serving others is that you don’t have to have any special qualifications to be able to do so. Service is simply helping others or doing something for them. The biggest roadblock we come across, is ourselves. We get wrapped up in our lives and can’t “find the time” to help others. For some, there just is nothing left over to give substantially to others. Don’t let this stop you.
This doesn’t need to be and probably won’t be your end-all, be-all, do-all answer to happiness, but this can be as simple as sharing time with someone who is unable to leave their home, or is living in a nursing home. If you are service minded you could also be as involved as working full-time for an organization dedicated to serving others. While service is altruistic by nature, you could just be lucky enough to be able to pay the bills by sharing of yourself with others.
A life of service is not for everyone, but I encourage you to try it out and see how it fits. You might be surprised. You could be the only factor in someone’s life that makes a difference for them.
